Conditioned taste aversion (CTA) is an acquired adaptive reaction protecting animals against repeated ingestion of flavors the intake of which has been followed by illness. The biological importance of CTA is reflected by the robustness of the phenomenon as well as by its ubiquitous presence in the animal kingdom. CTA was introduced into physiological psychology by Garcia [1], and studies have been reported in about 2000 articles [2] and scores of monographs [3] and symposial volumes [4,5]. The main attraction of CTA for neurobiologists is the unusual properties of the underlying learning process.
